VACCINATION .. PM Modi launches vaccination drive, urges citizens to keep safety protocols on for more time

NEW DELHI: India’s Covid-19 vaccination drive was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as scheduled on Saturday with a call to the nation to confidently take the step forward but still keep the Covid safety protocols going for more time.

The world’s largest vaccination drive would involve, in stages, around a billion people. The phase one that started today will see inoculation done done on three crore people, mostly frontline covid-control healthcare workers and security personnel on C-duty, through over 3,000 sessions across the country.

Among those who were vaccinated on Saturday included the head of Pune’s Serum Institute, Adar Poonawalla.

Over one crore people in India were infected by the virus while 1.5lakh persons died of the pandemic so far. Maharashtra state – mainly the Mumbai and Pune metropolises – suffered the maximum deaths.

The government has set in place a vaccination helpline, 1075, which will address concerns of the general public in this respect.
