NEWS COVID VACCINATION
NEW DELHI: India’s Covid vaccination drive, involving and stretched in phases over several months, will start on January 16. Priority will be accorded to some three crore special segments like healthcare workers and security staff in the forefront of the Covid fight. The next in line would be those above age 50 and people having co-morbidity conditions. Some 27crore people will be covered in this phase.
The two vaccines that will be used are Covishield and Covaxin, both having been certified safe by regulators. Nearly 80crore persons have been listed for the vaccination drive. There will be more than two lakh vaccinators and 3.7lakh support staff besides 61,000 programme managers across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the preparedness via a video-conference with state leaderships on Saturday and thereafter gave the green signal for the start of the vaccination programme, the Union Health Ministry stated.
India has reported around 18,700 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total national tally so far to 1,04,50,284, a release by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) stated on Sunday. The recoveries have surged to 1,00,75,950, while the death toll touched 1,51,000 with over 200 deaths in the last 24 hours, the ministry stated this morning. Maharashtra and Kerala scenarios remain worse in recent days. –IHN-NN
