ARRIVED … New strain of Covid-19 found in six returnees from UK; ALERT

NEWS COVID STRAIN

NEW DELHI: The new strain of Sars-Cov-2 virus has arrived in India. Six passengers arriving by air from the United Kingdom have tested positive for the new strain, the Union Health Ministry announced on Tuesday.

This announcement, the ministry said, was based on initial results of genome sequencing of positive samples released by the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium labs. Samples from six UK returnees have been found to be positive, they carrying the new strain – of these, three are under treatment at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, two in CCMB, Hyderabad and one in NIV, Pune,” the ministry stated.

All these have been isolated and kept in confinement to ensure they do not spread the virus to others. Maximum alert is maintained with respective state government keeping a close watch. Those whom these six got in touch with after arrival have been quarantined.

The new Covid-19 strain spreads faster though other aspects remain the same, doctors in UK had stated. The strain from UK might already have reached several countries and a repeat of the Covid-19 situation could be close at hand.

Notably, over 30,000 passengers have arrived in Indian airports from UK between November 25 and December 23.

There were substantial inflows in the days before the Christmas. These passengers are being tracked and subjected to RT-PCR tests to detect Covid-19 and the new strain. “ Of all the samples tested, 114 have tested positive for Covid-19. These samples have been sent to labs for genome sequencing. –IHN-NN
