KOLKATA: Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee died at age 85 due to Covid complications here on Sunday. He is survived by wife, son and a daughter.
The death occurred at a private hospital in South Kolkata shortly after noon. The curtains came down on a career in the entertainment industry lasting over 60 years. With his demise, the Bengali cinema lost one of the most versatile actors of all times, who had worked closely with legendary director Satyajit Ray and others.
“We declare with a heavy heart that Shri Soumitra Chatterjee breathed his last at 12:15pm today. We pay our homage to his soul,” the Belle Vue Clinic said in a medical bulletin.
Soumitra’s roles, in over 300 films, portrayed social life in its most telling manners, the subject matters as vivid as the partition of Bengal, the creation of Bangladesh, the sway of Communism in Bengal etc. He represented the Golden Age of Bengali cinema.
The veteran director had been honoured with top civilian honour Padma Bhushan as also the Dadasaheb Phalke award for Best Actor. IHN-NN
