NEWS OBAMA RAHUL
NEW DELHI: Former US President Barack Obama does not rate Congress leader Rahul Gandhi very high. He says Rahul has an “unformed” quality of a poorly informed student.
In his just-released memoir, Obama described Rahul thus: “Rahul Gandhi has “a nervous, unformed quality about him, as if he were a student who’d done the coursework and was eager to impress the teacher but deep down lacked either the aptitude or the passion to master the subject.”
New York Times, which reviewed the former president’s memoirs, cited this quote in the newspaper this week. Obama had visited India in December 2017, when Rahul Gandhi was vice president of the Congress party.
The memoir is titled, A Promised Land. Obama’s eight-year leadership of the US was from 2009 to 2017. On Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Obama was quoted as saying he has a kind of impassive integrity. “Secretary of Defense Bob Gates and the Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh both come across as having a kind of impassive integrity”.
Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Nehru family that ruled India for most part of the post-Independence period from 1947, functioned as a period as the party president. He quit the post after the debacle of the grand old party in the 2019 parliament elections when people overwhelmingly voted for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
At present, Rahul’s mother Sonia Gandhi, a former president of the family-run party, is functioning as the interim president of the Congress establishment. Many Indians too feel he’s not cut for politics, and does not take sufficient interest in matters of importance. He however makes it a point to surface now and then with caustic comments against Prime Minister Modi. IHN-NN
