MUMBAI: Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was arrested here on Wednesday by the Maharashtra Police, in connection with the case of death of an interior designer and his mother in 2018. The police assaulted him before the arrest, effected around 7am, the TV channel alleged. The case, which had been closed a year ago citing lack of evidence to implicate Goswami and others, has been revived now to effect the arrest.
Goswami was arrested at his Worli residence in the morning, an hour after the police reached his 17th floor residence early in the morning. Goswami and his wife, inside the apartment, did not open the door for an hour, keeping the cops in waiting outside, police said.
Two others –Feroz and Nitesh– were also arrested in connection with the case from other parts of Mumbai.
As per the case, the 54-year-old Anway Naik who owned the Concord Design Pvt Ltd committed suicide after the Republic TV channel and two other firms failed to pay up money for the interior design works he did in setting up the channel’s studio. The due from Republic Channel was of over Rs 80 lakh, while two other firms also owed dues to the design firm, totally of the order of a few crores. Anway’s mother Kumud, too had ended her life.
The bodies had been recovered from their home in Alibaug, Raigad district. As per the case, the post mortem report showed Anway’s was suicide while the mother died of strangulation. It was suspected that Anway killed his mother before he ended his own life, so that she would not suffer after his death.
Anway’s wife Akshata had filed a case after the two deaths, in which she had accused Aranb Goswami and others of being responsible for the deaths.
Arnab Goswami, the feisty TV anchor who had made a big name while as the head of the TimesNow TV channel owned by the Times of India group had shifted his interests to newly formed Republic TV of Bengaluru businessman and BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar some years ago. He has major investment in Republic TV apart from being its editor-in-chief.
The Republic TV has been earning the wrath of the Uddhav Thackeray government of Shiv Sena NCP Congress combine in Maharashtra for quite some time over its aggressive coverage of events, principally relating to the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. This was in the context of accusations that Maharashtra minister and son of Udhhav, Aaditya Thackeray, had played some role in the Bollywood actor’s death.
Recently, Pune police had filed a case against Republic TV for manipulating the TRP ratings by paying up households to keep the channel on throughout day and night, irrespective of whether or not they viewed it or not. Arnab Goswami had been attacked in Mumbai streets a couple of months ago, and the Mumbai police was not being cooperative in this respect, as per allegations from Goswami. IHN-NN
