NEWS HATHRAS RAHUL
NEW DELHI: A confrontation unfolded between Uttar Pradesh police and a Congress team led by Rahul Gandhi, as he proceeded on the Delhi-Noida Highway to Hathras. This was where a 19-year-old Dalit girl was brutally attacked, after suspected rape by alleged gang of upper caste men on September 14. The girl died later at a hospital in Delhi where she was taken for treatment.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were travelling in a convoy, which was blocked by the police after they covered some 150km of the journey by the highway from their home in Delhi.
The obvious purpose of Rahul Gandhi and his team was to meet the family members of the hapless girl. Rahul Gandhi fell down to the bushes at one time when there was a push and shove by his supporters and the cops. This, after the cops tried to stop the march, saying ban orders existed in Hathras.
The girl’s body was taken from the Delhi hospital and buried forcefully by the UP cops after dismissing the requests from the girl’s family to have a last look at the body. Police on Thursday claimed that the forensic report did not have any evidence of the girl being raped. They had no answer as to why the girl was brutally attacked by the gang of men.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had talked to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday, asking his to inquire into the incident and send a report to the PMO. Yogi soon set up a Special Investigative Team to enquire into the incident. Uttar Pradesh, known for its lawlessness and attacks on Dalits and Muslims in frequent incidents, also has earned notoriety for rape and killing of girls from poor families.
Yogi Adityana who heads the BJP government in the state could not improve the law and order situation in the state, which remained grim even during the time of the SP rule by Akhilesh Yadav, and previously by his father Mulayam Singh Yadav, himself a gun-totting thug before he became a minister.
