YES TO BJP … Anti-CAA Shaheenbagh protesters among scores who joined BJP in Delhi

NEW DELHI: In a curious development, scores of Muslims joined the BJP at an event got up to receive them to the party – and some of them were participants of the famous Shaheenbagh protests held by women in the Old Delhi area against the BJP government-introduced new Citizenship Amendment law, the National Register of Citizens.

The protest had been held by almost entirely by women from the Muslim community without anyone to lead them from the front. This had caused major traffic problems on the Delhi-Noida link road, between February 14 and March 24. The peaceful but resolute protest ended almost close to the declaration of a nationwide lockdown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.

BJP claims that Muslim women in general are favourably disposed to it after the Modi government’s decision to abolish the religiously loaded system of triple talaq. Under this, Muslim men could divorce his wife by uttering ‘talaq, talaq, talaq’, and faced no legal hassle about separation thereafter. The ending of the system had been welcomed openly by some Muslim women organisations. IHN-NN
