NEW DELHI: Doyen of Indian classical and vocal music, Pandit Jasraj, passed away in New Jersey in the United States at 5.15 Eastern Standard Time. He was aged 90. A recipient of Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, he straddled the field of music like a colossus for decades.
“With profound grief we inform that Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj ji breathed his last this morning … due to a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, USA,” a statement issued by his family said.
Pandit Jaraj hailed from Haryana state.
As a mark of the high esteem he had among music lovers worldwide, a minor planet situated between Mars and Jupiter had been named after Pandit Jasraj by the International Astronomical Union last year. The planet had been discovered on November 11, 2006, It is listed 300128 after his date of birth in reverse order.
PM Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on Twitter, “The unfortunate demise of Pandit Jasrajji leaves a deep void in the Indian cultural sphere.
