AYODHYA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the Bhoomi Poojan and Shilanyas for the Ram Temple at what was the old Babri Masjid Site, which is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, at a spiritually charged event shortly after noon on Wednesday, in the presence of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and a battery of Sangh Parivar and BJP top functionaries.

The prime minster, dressed in darkish saffron coloured Dhoti and Kurta, first stopped at the 10th Century Hanuman Garhi temple for prayers and then moved ahead to offer prayers to Ram Lalla and then did a Sashtanga Pranam at the Ram Janmabhoomi. The Prime Minister also planted a sapling of Parijat before we walked ahead, sat for the rituals, and then performed the Shilanyas. Soil from 2000 pilgrimage sites and water from 100 rivers were kept ready for the rituals.

Nine bricks, among the lakhs sent by devotees from around the world in year 1989, were kept ready at the site for the PM to perform the Shilanyas.

RSS chief Bhagwat, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and state governor Anandiben Patel were among those present on the dais. Said Modi in his address of the gathering, which was live televised, “A grand temple will now be built for our Ram Lalla who had been staying makeshift tent till now. Today, Ram janmbhoomi breaks free of the cycle of breaking and getting built again – that had been going on for centuries.” -_Agencies, IHN-NN
