NEWS GOLD ARRESTSKOCHI: Diplomatic bags-linked gold smuggling accused Swapna Suresh and her associate Sandeep Nair, arrested in Bengaluru on Saturday, are being brought to Kochi for interrogation and evidence-taking by a team of the National Investigation Agency.
Swapna was arrested from a flat at Koramandala -7 in Bengaluru after NIA received singals that she was in Bengaluru along with her present husband and two children. The hint about her exact whereabouts came when her daughter’s phone got switched on inadvertently, and NIA picked the signals. An NIA-Customs team in TVM, conducting a raid at Sandeep’s brother Sarith’s home in TVM got the first hint that the accused were in Bengaluru, after a call came to Sarith from his brother from Karnataka.
Swapna and Sandeep would be produced before a magistrate after their arrival here, as per reports. Meanwhile, Sandeep’s Benz car as also some travel bags were confiscated by the investigating team.
As per the case, initially handled by the Customs, 30kg of gold was brought in from the Gulf in diplomatic bags addressed to the UAE consulate in TVM, which was caught at the airport. Similar gold smuggling was done eight times in recent weeks by the accused, as per Customs statement before the Kerala high court, which is set to hear an anticipatory bail plea from Swapna.The main accused is Sarith, who went to collect the bags, Swapna who forged documents to get the bags, Sandeep who was formerly a daily wage earner and driver who now owned a Benz car and other valuables, and Fazeel Fareed of Ernakulam, who is involved in other gold smuggling cases in the past as well.
