NEWS KUWAIT EXPATS
KUWAIT CITY: With passage of a new legislation, the Gulf sultanate of Kuwait would halve the nation’s expatriate population to 30 per cent, citing an economic crisis caused by the slump in oil prices and the coronavirus pandemic. Estimates are that eight lakh Indians will, thus, have to leave the country.
The Kuwait National Assembly’s legal and legislative committee has approved the expat quota bill. It has a provision that stipulates that foreign nationals from no single country should exceed 15 per cent of the total population of the country. Indians form the largest expatriate population in Kuwait. The number of Indians in Kuwait is put at nearly 15 lakh. Total number of expatriates in the country is of the order of 30 lakhs.—Agencies, IHN-NN
