NEW DELHI: The Union Power ministry has allayed apprehensions about any grid snag during the 9-minute period on Sunday night when people would switch off their lights as called upon by Prime Minister in a demonstration of the nation’s resolve to fight the corona virus pandemic.

“The appeal of the Prime Minister is to simply switch off the lights in their homes from 9 pm to 9.09 pm on April 5. There is no call to switch off either street lights or appliances like computers, TVs, fans, refrigerators and ACs in the homes. Only lights should be switched off,” the power ministry stated on Saturday. The PM’s call was to people to switch off their lights at homes and light a diya for 10 minutes in front of their homes or at balconies, and not stir out of their homes into streets as a lock-down is in force.

“Lights in hospitals and all other essential services like public utilities, municipal services, offices, police stations, manufacturing facilities will remain on. The call given by the PM is to just switch off lights in residences. All local bodies have been advised to keep streetlights on for public safety,” the ministry said in a statement. IHN-NN
