DEMISE … Actor and theatre personality Shriram Lagoo is no more; end in Pune

MUMBAI: Celebrated Bollywood and Marathi actor Dr Shriram Lagoo is no more. The actor, best known for his character roles, died of cardiac arrest at age 92, at his home in Pune. The veteran had acted in over 200 Hindi and Marathi films as also dramas. He made a bigger mark in theatre, acting in many highly acclaimed dramas. The death came at 8pm on Tuesday.

Lagoo is survived by his wife Deepa as also a son and a daughter. Another son, Tanveer, had died when a stone hit him while travelling by train. The last rites of the actor would be performed after Lagoo’s son arrives from the US.

Lagoo started acting in his college days, but got fully active since his40s. His popular films and plays are Sinhaasan, Gharonda, Maqadar Ka Sikandar, Lootmaar, Mukta, Pinjara, Naatsamrat, Himalayachi Saoli, Ek Din Achanak, Sreeman Sreemathi, Jwala etc. 

Lagoo was born in Satara and graduated as an ENT surgeon. He served as a doctor in Pune for a few years before he left India for higher studies in UK and Canada, and ending up as a doctor in Kenya for some time.

He eventually played a major role in promoting the theatre movement in Marathi. 

He also set up a fund for social work, and in 1999 participated in the Anna Hazare movement against corruption. 

Lagoo’s biography is titled Lamaan, meaning, ‘the carrier of goods’. Wife Deepa is also a noted theatre, TV and film actress.
