NEWS AKKITHAM JNANPITH
NEW DELHI: Highly acclaimed Malayalam litterateur and poet, Akkitham Achyuthan Namboodiri, has been named for the Jnanpith Literary award this year. The announcement was made by the Jnanpith selection panel here on Friday. The 94-year-old litterateur started writing poems from age eight. Winner of several top awards including the Ezhuthassan Puraskaram of the Kerala Government, Akkitham had been honoured with Padma Shri by the Union Government.
The award carries a cash of Rs 11lakh and a silver memento. Akkitham is the sixth Malayalam writer to win the Jnanpith, among them the first being poet G Sankarakurup. SK Pottekkat( Oru Desathinte Katha), Thakazhi (Chemmeen) MT Vasudevan Nair (Randam Uuzham), ONV Kurup were among the others.
Among his prominent works are Panchavarna Kilikal, Irupatham Noottandinte Ithihasam, Kaakkapullikal, Idinju Polinja Lokam, Eettathi Nunaye Parayu etc.
Akkitham, alongside his writings, worked as a journalist-editor for various Malayalam publications. To his credit are over45 books of poems, short-stories, dramas etc.
Akkitham hails from Kumaranallur in Palakkad. Wife is Sreedevi Antharjanam, and children are Parvathi, Indira, Sreeja, Leela, Vasudevan and Narayanan. Renowned artist Akkitham Narayanan is his brother. IHN-NN
