NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will have to seek floor test before Wednesday evening, a special bench of the Supreme Court ruled here on Tuesday. The bench, constituted on Sunday to hear petitions from the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress, issued the ruling after it held a sitting on Monday and considered the matter in detail.
The bench ruled that the floor test will have to be telecast live, so that the people will see for themselves as to what happened in the assembly. The test will be done by a pro-tem speaker or temporary speaker, immediately after he swears in the newly elected members of the assembly. There should be no resort to secret ballot.
The assembly polls were held in the state on October 21 and results declared on October 24, but the ministry formation was delayed due to break-up of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance as the Sena demanded the CM’s post and the BJP refused to budge. Sena also demanded a 50-50 share of ministries.
Governor BS Koshyari called in Fadnavis and NCP legislative party leader Ajit Pawar to be sworn in as CM and deputy CM on Saturday morning after they produced letter of support from legislators supporting them. The majority for the BJP-Ajit Pawar alliance is suspect. IHN-NN
