MUMBAI: The highly-billed Bullet Train Project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad – half the land for which is already acquired – might face odds if the Congress-NCP-Shiv Sena alliance comes to power in Maharashtra, a report said on Friday.
The total cost of the project, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he took power in 2014, is kept at Rs 1.08trillion. Of this, the Maharashtra government’s share is Rs 5,000crore. The Centre as also the Gujarat government will also put in huge sums for the project, IANS reported.
A plan agreed on by the three parties preparatory to forming the alliance is to approve of an action programme for five years, with heavy emphasis on the farm sector – a constituency in special for NCP’s Sharad Pawar in special, with whom are allied the big-time farmers of Western Maharashtra or the Maratha belt.
How to find huge funds for the farm sector was discussed, an opinion that emerged was to tell the Centre that Maharashtra will not give its share for the Bullet Train project, and divert this money for the farm sector. The support and votes of the farm sector is crucial for any party or alliance to win power.
The 508-km line for the bullet trains is to be completed by 2023, as per present schedule.

The cost of travel would be as high as Rs 3,000 between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. A bullet train will conduct altogether 70 trips between the two destinations, 35 to each side, and travel at a speed of 320km per hour. There is a plan to extend the destination from Mumbai to Pune, as well.

Japanese involvement in the project will be prominent. Japan is running bullet trains for the past few decades, and China too has recently introduced bullet trains running at higher speeds of above 400km per hour. While Indian contract firms will lay the line for over 460km, the Japanese firms will be involved in the rest of the line laying, which will be under-sea works. –IHN-NN
