LAHORE: Over 60 passengers lost their lives, and about 50 injured, as a train caught fire Thursday morning, destroying three carriages at Liaquatpur, near Rahim Yar Khan town in southern Punjab province. The fire erupted as some passengers tried to cook breakfast inside the train using a gas stove in the early morning hour, which exploded.
Reports received here quoting railway minister said most of the victims were Islamic preachers on their way to attend a congregation. The Tezgam express was on its way from Karachi to Lahore.
Railway minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said most of the dead were preachers of the Tableeghi Jamaat on their way to attend a meeting in Raiwind. Death occurred to many as they tried to jump off the train after the fire broke out in one carriage and spread to two adjoining carriages in a jiffy. The train came to a stop after fire engulfed the coaches. Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed grief over the incident. — Agencies, IHN-NN
