NEWS FADNAVIS BJP LP
MUMBAI: Devendra Fadnavis was elected on Wednesday as the BJP legislature party leader in the new assembly formed after the October 21 elections. He is expected to form the next government on Friday with support and involvement of the long-term ally, the Shiv Sena. Indications are that the BJP will grant deputy CM post to Sena, but will also reserve a similar post to itself, meaning two Dy CMs.
The Shiv Sena is yet to give its nod, but a larger power sharing arrangement will be worked out by Thursday, BJP sources said.
As per initial hints, the BJP would not be inclined to give the home, finance and revenue portfolios to the Shiv Sena. The Sena would insist on at least one of these posts or even two, since the CM post is taken by the BJP. Fadnavis, upon his election thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief Amit Shah and sena chief Uddhav Thackeray for taking matters this far. “The rest will be worked out soon,” he said.
Fadnavis reiterated that he will be chief minister for five years, in the second term. A leader drawn from the Brahmin stock in Nagpur, Fadnavis has strong links to the RSS, a reason also why he is unassailable. During his first term of five years, there was no open complaint from within the BJP about his styles of functioning. However, there were speculations that a second term for him was not fully assured and everything would depend on the outcome of the assembly polls. However, the BJP is today in a position it cannot ignore the claim of Fadnavis for a second term as CM. IHN-NN
