NEWS BOBDE SUPREME COURT CJI
NEW DELHI: Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde is likely to be the new Chief Justice of India. Bobde is the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court, next only to the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, who is set to retire soon. Gogoi recommended Bobde’s name as next CJI, in a letter to the Union Law Ministry, which will now send a recommendation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who would in turn write to the President to effect the appointment, as per procedure.
Justice Bobde hails from a family in Nagpur, the winter capital of Maharashtra. He studied at the SFS college and did law at Nagpur Law College, before entering the field of law. He was made an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in 2000. Bobde has eight years of service at the Supreme Court, and was formerly Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The new CJI could take charge by November 19, when Justice Gogoi superannuates. IHN-NN
