CHENNAI: President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed bilateral and global matters in a free-wheeling atmosphere over dinner Friday night at the Mahabalipuram coastal settings overlooking the Bay of Bengal. The meeting was marked by immense warmth and cordiality. The two engaged themselves in discussions, sight-seeing and much more, in a fashion similar to the meeting Xi and Modi had in 2014, shortly after the PM took office, in Modi’s home turf of Gujarat.
Cultural performances added colour and glory to the meeting between the two leaders, as dancers and others enlivened the evening at Mahabalipuram — also known as Mamallapuram — where the three-in-one Shore Temple stood as witness. The temple and other monuments there are a world heritage site.
PM Modi attended events wearing a set of white dhoti and shirt, as Tamil culture has it. Xi, on his part, too turned informal by appearing without his overcoat.
Also present in Mahabalipuram were National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and external affairs minister S Jaishankar.
History stood by as the two leaders talked. The monuments at Mahabalipuram were carved out of rocks along the Coromandel coast during the time of the Pallava Kings who ruled the region in the Seventh and Eighth centuries.
Xi, on a two-day visit, was put up at ITC Grand Chola. He was given a red carpet welcome on arrival at Chennai International Airport earlier in the day by Governor Banwarilal Purohit, chief minister Edapadi Palaniswami, deputy CM O Pannerselvam and top political functionaries as also officials.
The present informal summit to sort out matters between India and China is a continuation of the previous informal summit held at Wuhan in April 2018. IHN-NN
