PM …PM Modi on US visit, to meet Prez Trump and address UN General Assembly; Howdy Modi as high point of week’s visit

NEW DELHI: Prime minister Narendra Modi left here on a week-long US visit, which will also see him addressing the UN General Assembly and holding discussions with US President Donald Trump, among other top governmental functionaries there. Modi aims to present India as a vibrant land of opportunities, a trustworthy partner and a global leader before the world audience.
The PM would meet Trump at a high-profile event in Houston as also New York. He has said in a tweet before his departure that his meetings with US president and others would review bilateral relations in order to bring “even more benefits to our two nations and peoples.” He said the US was a “vital partner for our national development.” Added he: “Our shared values, convergent interests and complementary strengths provide the foundation  for natural partnership between the world’s oldest and largest democracies.”
Modi would hold around 20 bilateral meetings in New York. During his UN speech, the PM would explain India’s role towards development and peace and security, but no mention will be made of Kashmir or Article 370 which is an “internal issue,” the external affairs ministry stated here. India will host an event at UN marking the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
In Houston, the PM would interact with CEOs of leading US energy companies with the aim of enhancing theIndia-US energy partnership. A ‘Howdy Modi’ event is being got up there by the Indian diaspora on September 22, where President Trump and a large number of American lawmakers will be present alongside Modi. A Madison Square moment, a high point of the PM’s earlier visit to the US, is sought to be created, its spirit pitched at a Himalayan high.
In New York, the PM will address the opening plenary of the Bloomberg Global Business Forum and receive the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Goalkeepers Goals Award 2019. –IHN-NN
