NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains as the most followed Indian on Twitter, with the total number of his followers crossing 50million mark on the micro-blogging site. The PM, an avid social media activist, overtook many world leaders in this race, and his handle @narendramodi is a “little behind that of US President Donald Trump, who boasts of having 64million followers.
Creditably, former US President Barack Obama remains on the top slot, with over 108million twitterati following him. No Indian politician is even close to PM Modi. Notably, the number of followers on the official Twitter handle of the Prime Minister’s Office has crossed 30million.
On the ground too, Modi carries crowds with him through his speeches at various platforms, including at stages abroad, where the Indian community in particular flocks to his meetings with rare zeals, starting with a show in Madison Square in the United State near-about the start of his first term as PM. Modi is also very active on Twitter and regularly puts out texts on everything.
Modi started using social media since in 2009 as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and his popularity grew after becoming Prime Minister in 2014.
The Prime Minister is also active on his Facebook handle having nearly 44million followers and on Instagram around 25million followers.
An annual survey by Gallup International put Prime Minister Modi at number three among the global leaders. The respondents in the survey covering people across 50 countries, rated Modi ahead of China’s Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, then British Prime Minister Theresa May and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu among others.
The top ranking in the survey went to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, followed by French President Emmanuel Macron. –Agencies, IHN-NN
