NEW DELHI: Highly-rated lawyer and former Union law minister Ram Jetmalani passed away at his residence here on Sunday morning. Jetmalani was 95 and ailing for some time. The cremation would take place this evening, his son Mahesh Jetmalani said.
Jetmalani, who had married twice, sired four children in the two wives – Durga and Ratna. The children are Rani, Shobha and Mahesh in the first wife and Janak in the second wife. Rani is no more. He died at 7.45am. The last rites will be performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium.
The prominent lawyer, who handled both civil and criminal cases with ease and argued several prominent cases in Supreme Court, was with the Jan Sangh first and the BJP later for long years. He was a minister in two BJP-led ministries. He resigned from the Atal Behari cabinet following differences with the PM. Of late, he was with the Rashtriya Janata Dal of Lalu Prasad Yadav and represented the party in Rajya Sabha from Bihar till his demise.
Jetmalani was born in Shikarpur, Sindh province, which is now part of Pakistan. His first marriage was at age 18, and the second marriage took place before Partition. She was a lawyer by profession. –IHN-NN
