MANAMA, Bahrain: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Bahrain on Sunday, after receiving the Order of Zayed, the top civilian honour from the UAE in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Here too, the PM received a similar honour, the King Hamad Order of Renaissance, amid cheers from the Indian community and the locals.

The Prime Minister spent some time at Bahrain’s Shreenathji Temple, which is among the oldest temples in the Gulf region and a symbol of the age-old ties between Bahrain and India. He launched a $4.2million development project for the 200-year-old Sri Krishna temple.

Addressing the Indian community at the packed Bahrain National Stadium in Manama,  Modi said his visit was as the head of the government, as the Prime Minister of the country, but its main purpose was to meet the Indians diaspora and communicate with them and thousands not friends in Bahrain.

“The diversity and colours of India are our strength, it astonishes and attracts the world,” Narendra Modi told the Indian expats, who switched on their mobile flash lights to welcome the prime minister upon his arrival. “It took quite a long time for an Indian Prime Minister to visit Bahrain,” Narendra Modi said, adding that he was fortunate enough to be the first Indian prime minister to visit the tiny Gulf Kingdom.

The prime minister would later head for France, again, to attend the G7 Summit there, before returning to India.
