ED PROBE: Sena leader Raj Thackeray interrogated by ED in financial scam case

MUMBAI: A big ‘drama’ unfolded here on Thursday as Maharashtra Navanirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray was hauled up for investigations by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in the probe related to IL & FS money laundering case. The allegations of wrongdoing was linked to Kohinoor Mills CTNL, a company of Umesh Joshi, son of former chief minister Manohar Joshi.
MNS leaders who called for a hartal in Mumbai to protest the action against its leader were detained in droves by the Mumbai police, even as Raj Thackeray intervened and his followers called off the protest.

The case related to activities undertaken by Umesh Joshi and others with suspected corrupt money. It was in 2005 that they formed a consortium to buy up Mumbai’s prominently located Kohinoor-3 spinning mills, with its huge land assets, for over Rs 400crore. The mill was located close to the Shiv Sena Bhavan in Dadar, central Mumbai. Their idea was to erect a mall or a commercial complex there. The IL-FS group was involved in the deal by Raj Thackeray, Joshi and others.

In 2008, the ISFS surrendered its shares for as low as Rs 90crore. Raj Thackeray too sold his share and made a huge profit, as per records. The whole deal smacked of huge corruption and an investigation was ongoing.

Raj Thackeray is the nephew of Bal Thackeray, who founded the Shiv Sena and roared like a tiger in Mumbai for many years. Balasahib’s son, Uddhav Thackeray inherited the political legacy of his father, while Raj Thackeray initially made waves with his uncle and later split to form the MNS. MNS did not fare well in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, as also other polls in the past.  IHN-NN
