SPACE … Chandrayaan 2 enters Moon’s oribt; landing on September 7


BENGALURU: India’s ambitious Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft entered Moon’s orbit at 0902hours IST Monday, as planned, by use of the onboard propulsion system, ISRO here announced amid jubilation among scientists and technocrats at the Space centre.

“Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver was completed successfully today (August 20, 2019) at 0902 hrs IST as planned, using the onboard propulsion system. The duration of the manoeuvre was 1738 seconds. With this, Chandrayaan-2 was successfully inserted into a Lunar orbit. The orbit achieved is 114 km x 18072 km,” the Isro statement said.

The most critical phase in the mission is over. Isro said it will perform four more manoeuvres on August 21, 28, 31 and September 1. After that two orbit manoeuvres will be performed on the lander before descent and soft-landing on September 7.–IHN-NN
