NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying homage to departed former prime minister and BJP stalwart of yesteryear, Atal Behari Vajpayee, on his first death anniversary here on Friday. Accompanying the PM in offering floral tributes to the former premier was Home Minister Amit Shah, among others.
Vajpayee’s adopted family members too offered floral tributes at his final resting place.
Vajpayee, a legendary parliamentarian and outstanding orator, had first entered government in 1977 when Morarji Desai led a Janata Party government at the Centre. He functioned as external affairs minister. Vajpayee’s term as prime minister ended in 2004 when the Congress-led UPA captured power. The final years of Vajpayee was plagued by health problems.
A highly respected leader hailing from Brahmin community, Vajpayee wielded strong influence in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, besides Delhi. IHN-NN
