NEWS POLITICS BENGAL SOVAN TMC BJP
KOLKATA: In a fresh jolt to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, former Kolkata mayor and Trinamool Congress MLA Sovan Chatterjee joined the BJP on Wednesday – in a steady stream of desertions from the ruling TMC to the saffron party. Sovan was welcomed into the party by BJP state leaders Mukul Roy and Arujun Singh. Another TMC leader, Baishaki Banerjee also joined the TMC at the same event.
Sovan Chaatterjee was a source of strength for chief minister in Kolkata, and the exit has come as a big shock to the party which is already on the defensive with a flurry of resignations of prominent leaders who are taking a fancy to the BJP. Altogether six TMC legislators have quit the party to join the saffron brigade in recent times. Also, one each Congress and CPIM legislators had quit their parties to walk into the BJP.
The political mood is in favour of the BJP after the Lok Sabha polls in which the saffron party came from behind and snatched 18 out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats, mostly from the TMC, which got 22 seats. –IHN-NN
