NEWS SHAH KASHMIR ARTICLES SCRAP PRESIDENT PM ADDRESS…

UPDATE: PM MODI TO ADDRESS NATION ON AUGUST 7, WEDNESDAY.

NEW DELHI: Article 370 and Article 35A have been scrapped in Jammu and Kashmir, as per an announcement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament on Monday. These Constitutional provisions had given autonomous status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir and special privileges to the citizens of Kashmir. From now on, unlike in the past, any Indian can go and stay in Kashmir.

The RSS was among those who had been advocating for abrogation of Article 370 as also Article 35A which grants special privileges to the citizens of Kashmir. “Article 370 scrapped through a Presidential order.” The Home Minister made the statement first in the Rajya Sabha, followed by the Lok Sabha.

Jammu and Kashmir will be a semi-state like Delhi. Ladakh will be Union Territory. Jammu and Kashmir will not have a governor. It will have a Lt Governor with limited powers. Centre will oversee law and order.

Govt will introduce bill on bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, the home minister said. Ladakh will be a Union Territory without an assembly.

Special Status for Kashmir so far meant no outsider could go and set up home there other than for administrative purposes. Now, anyone could go and settle down in Kashmir. “We want to do things in one go, not piecemeal,” says Shah, amid huge Opposition protests in Rajya Sabha.

“Unilateral decision is illegal and unconstitutional,” says Mehbooba Mufti, former CM and PDP leader, who is now under house arrest. “Government acted surreptitiously at night,” alleges Opposition in Parliament.

Chairman of Rajya Sabha Venkaiah Naidu gave four hours in total for discussion on four bills, today, at the end of which voting will take place today itself.

PM Modi and Amit Shah met for an hour Monday morning before the cabinet meeting was held. A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security was also held in the morning. The CCS meet was participated in by PM Modi, home minister Amit Shah, defence minister Rajnath Singh, external affairs minister S Jaishankar and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Maintenance of law and order and ownership of land in Jammu and Kashmir now rests entirely with the Union Government. In effect, jammu and Kashmir will be a Union Territory, with an assembly; ladakh will have no assembly and will be governed as another Union Territory by the Centre. In effect, the Centre have over-riding powers over Jammu and Kashmir state, and is a part of India just like any other Indian state or Union Territory.
