KARNATAKA … Yeddy wins trust vote, way clear for BJP governance in state

BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddiyurappa won the confidence vote in the assembly on Monday, setting the stage for his formation of a BJP ministry, and speaker KR Ramesh Kumar put in his resignation, clearing the way for election of a new speaker.

Yeddiyurappa, who has the support of 105 BJP members in the assembly that has an effective strength of 208 now, said he would not indulge in any act of vengeance against anyone and will concentrate on governance matters.

The speaker had disqualified as many as 18 MLAs who pulled the rug from under the feet of JDS-Congress chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, leading to his exit from power at the height of a three-week-long political uncertainty in the state.

Yeddiyurappa’s return to power brings into fresh focus the stigma of corruption he bore during his previous terms in government. Reports are that the BJP has asked Yeddy, this time, to keep his family at bay and not involve them in any matter relating to governance.

Yeddy’s two sons, BS Raghavendra and BS Vijayendra, are being groomed as his successors in politics. Raghavendra had won the Lok Sabha polls from Shivamogga constituency. He also has a daughter, Umadevi, who said she would not interfere with her father’s official duties or responsibilities in any way. Vijayendra reportedly played a major role in pullling down the HD Kumaraswamy ministry. IHN-NN
