RAPE, MURDER & MORE … In lawless UP, sad fate of a girl raped by BJP MLA

KULDEEP SINGH SENGAR … the accused BJP MLA now in jail

LUCKNOW:  In lawless Uttar Pradesh, another hit-and-kill, with serious political overtones. A teenage girl, who had alleged that BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his men gang-raped her two years ago, was hit and critically wounded by a truck in Rae Bareli. Her aunt and her lawyer Mahendra Singh  died in the incident that happened in day-time in full view of many bystanders. The lawyer drove the vehicle in which the rape victim and her aunt were travelling when the truck hit it.

The rape-victim belonged to Unnao. She has been admitted to a hospital in a critical condition. The MLA is in jail in connection with the rape case, since last year.
After the girl, then a minor, made the allegation, her family was being persecuted in many ways, while the police was of little help to her, though a CBI inquiry is currently under way after a huge public outcry last year. Her father was attacked by the MLA’s men and he later died of such injuries while in police custody. One of her uncles was also attacked and killed by the MLA’s men, as was reported prominently by the media.
In a continuing saga, another of her uncle was also arrested and lodged in a jail in Rae Bareli. She was on her way to meet the uncle when the truck hit her, her aunt and the lawyer.  The lawyer was driving the car when the truck came from Opposite direction and hit the car. The aunt and the lawyer died in the mishap.
The Unnao girl had alleged that she was raped by the MLA at his residence in June, 2017. She was still a teenager.
After she raised the allegation, her father was arrested and jailed by cops on a charge of illegally carrying a fire-arm. This happened in April 2018. He died of injuries he received from manhandling by the BJP MLA’s henchmen.
Some time ago, she reported to CM Yogi Adityanath that she had been confined to a hotel room by the district administration and her uncle was killed by the MLA’s brother and his gang. “Later, they fatally attacked (and killed) my father,” she had said.
Beyond promises of help, no one from the ruling BJP or the Opposition came to her support other than issuing some public statements. While all the incidents had been prominently carried by the media, neither PM Modi nor BJP chief Amit Shah did anything to help the girl and her surviving family members.
No intervention from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Opposition in the past helped protect the rape victim. The NHRC had sent a notice to UP government and the state police chief, seeking a detailed report on the custodial death of the victim’s father. NHRC had urged the CM and the police chief to ensure that the victim’s family was not subjected to further harassment.
In 2018, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi too, in a statement, had condemned the way things were in Uttar Pradesh, after the gang-rape report surfaced. He put the blame on CM Adityanath and PM Modi, and left the matter at that. Notably, the two communist parties simply did not respond, even as they make a hue and cry over protection of rights, and rights of women and minorities. They hardly intervene in any such matters, other than organising occasional protests against the “anti-people policies” of the governments in power – a broad term which meant little.
Rae Bareli is the family turf of the Nehru family, from where UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi won the Lok Sabha polls yet again this time, when she polled over five lakh votes against 3.5lakh by the BJP nominee. Indira Gandhi represented Rae Bareli for many years in Parliament.

Even the ordering of a CBI inquiry, by itself, did not help give justice to the rape victim and her family; and this in a state ruled by PM Modi’s own BJP. –IHN-NN
