NEWS LETTER SWAMY
NEW DELHI: “If I were the prime minister, I would have thrown it into the dustbin,” was how senior parliamentarian and civil rights activist Dr Subramanian Swamy responded at a TV show about a letter written by a set of eminent personalities to PM Modi, expressing their anguish over cases of mob lynching by saffron crowds chanting “Jai Shri Ram”.
“There is no intolerance here… this is ridiculous… raising the issue of intolerance has become fashionable for some people these days,” Dr Subramanian Swamy, a member of the Rajya Sabha, said.
The letter was written by about 50 people in public life, many of them part of the Leftist lobby and some linked to the Congress. Political motive was suspected in the way they were brought together to write the letter. CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury defended the action of these men and women.
Long-time critics of PM Modi, like historian Ramachandra Guha, were among the group. Among them were mainly Bengali and South Indian film personalities like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Aparna Sen, Soumitra Chatterjee, Shyam Benegal, and Mani Ratnam. –IHN-NN
