NEWS CONGRESS JDS KARNATAKA
BENGALURU: With the resignation of two MLAs from the Congress party quit the assembly on Monday. Anand Singh and Ramesh Jarkiholi sent in their resignations to the Speaker, creating anxious moments for the Congress-JDS ruling alliance in the state. Rumours are that several more of Congress MLAs are likely to quit the party soon, meaning the survival of the HD Kumaraswamy ministry is at serious stake.
|Yeddy … waiting in the wings
BJP leader and former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa told the media on Monday that as per his information, there are about 20 ruling side MLAs planning their resignations. The BJP is the single largest party in the assembly, which has members way beyond the strength of the Congress party, which was ousted from power in the last assembly polls in May, 2018.
While the BJP has 104 seats, the Congress now has 78 seats and the JDS 37 seats. Two legislators – one an independent and the other of the BSP support the Congress-JDS coalition. In fact, by quickly forming a post-poll alliance, the Congress and the JDS gathered enough of numbers and formed the ministry after the assembly polls. The junior partner, JDS, was given the chief minister post by the Congress despite the larger size of seats the tricolour party got. The idea was to keep the BJP away from power.
However, the alliance between the JDS and the Congress is not functioning in a cohesive manner and the chief minister is often in tears and comes up with sob stories about the difficulties he faced from the Congress. He however is keen on hanging on to power.
Currently, the CM and his family is holidaying in the United States, after the tiring Lok Sabha campaign schedules for the JDS-Congress alliance in the state.
In the LS polls this time, the BJP has won 26 seats against its tally of 17 in 2014, while the Congress won one against its last time tally of 9 seats. The JDS got one seat against its win of two seats in the 2014 LS polls. This favourable scenario is energizing the BJP to wrest power from the Congress-JDS combine. IHN-NN
