GOGOI PLEA …CJI writes to PM, seeks raise in the strength of SC, and extension of the retirement age of judges to 65

NEW DELHI: In a new push, Chief Justice, Justice Ranjan Gogoi has written a note to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to increase the strength of judges in the Supreme Court and raise the retirement age of high court judges to 65. He proposed that this would help the judiciary clear the huge backlog of cases, which is posing a question mark over the efficacy of justice dispensation systems in the country.

The CJI said as many as 58,700cases were pending in the Supreme Court itself while the number was steadily increasing. He noted that in 1988, the strength of SC judges had been raised from 18 to 26; and then to 31 after two decades. But, this was not of much help, he noted and urged the PM to intervene and set things right. –IHN-NN
