NEW DELHI: In a big jolt to the Telugu Desam Party of N Chandrababu Naidu, four of the six Rajya Sabha MPs of the party crossed over to the BJP on Thursday. They are YS Choudhury, TG Venkitesh, Garikapoati Mohan Rao and CM Ramesh. They handed over their letters to this effect to Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu here.
Chandrababu Naidu, voted out of power in the assembly polls held alongside the LS polls this time, is currently holidaying in Europe with his family — but not after suffering a humiliation at Vijayawada Airport, where he was frisked by the security right and left when he went there to catch a flight to Hyderabad two days ago.
Responded Naidu via a twitter message: “We have lakhs of karyakarthas and crores of Telugu people behind us. History will repeat itself. There is nothing to worry.” He also justified his offensives against PM Modi and the BJP, and his exit from the NDA, by saying, “We quit only over Centre’s refusal to grant Special Category State status to us.”
Naidu not only lost the assembly polls, but also conceded defeat to the YSRC in 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats from the state.
BJP responded by saying Telugu Desam will be an empty house before Naidu returns home from his foreign tour.
Chandrababu Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh was among those defeated in the polls this time, in another major jolt to Naidu, who was grooming him to be his political heir and future chief minister. Naidu’s wife is daughter of matinee idol and former AP chief minister NT Rama Rao, who floated the Telugu Desam Party in 1982. Naidu, in 1995, ditched his father-in-law and NTR’s second wife Lakshmi Parvathi and took control of the party. NTR died the next year.
FIGHT AGAINST MODI
Naidu, along with West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee were in the forefront of the campaign and political manoeuvring against PM Modi and the BJP in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, and acted also as an adviser to the Congress leadership in planning strategies to take on Modi and the saffron party. Till a while ago, Naidu and his TDP were part of the NDA. Naidu was at the receiving end of derisive laughter as he had frequently airdashed to Delhi and Kolkata and other state capitals to rally forces against PM Modi. IHN-NN
