NEWS OM BIRLA
NEW DELHI: BJP member of Lok Sabha from Rajasthan, Om Birla, will be the BJP nominee for the Speaker post, in place of Sumitra Mahajan from Madhya Pradesh, who led the proceedings in the 16 th Lok Sabha. He had functioned as member of the Standing Committee on Energy in Parliament, as also member of the standing committee on Petitions as also the Consultative Committee for the ministry of social justice and empowerment.
Fiftyseven-year-old Om Birla defeated Congress party’s Ramnarayan Meena in Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha constituency this time. He was MLA in the state for three terms, the first win in 2003. He represented Kota Bundi in the last Lok Sabha. He is expected to file his nomination papers on Tuesday. The Congress party has decided to back the BJP nominee, and would not field any candidate. Likely, Om Birla’s nomination would be unanimous, in keeping with good traditions of democracy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi as leader of the house would propose the name of Birla and the Congress would second it. –IHN-NN
