NEWS RAJASTHAN CIVIC POLLS
JAIPUR: There is some cheer in Congress party circles in Rajasthan these days. After the severe drubbing in Lok Sabha polls which saw the party winning no seat, the Congress on Wednesday won eight setas in by-polls to 17 wards in 15 urban local bodies spread over 11 districts of the state. The polls were held on June 10.
The BJP won five seats, while Independents supported by the Congress bagged two seats.
The Congress had formed government in the state in the assembly polls held five months before the LS polls, though it had failed to get a clear majority in the assembly. In the December assembly polls, the Congress staged a return to power by winning 100 seats out of the total 199, the BJP 73 seats and BSP six seats, besides 20 seats won by others.
In the 2013 assembly polls, the BJP had won power with 163 seats against 21 by Congress and 3 by the BSP and 13 by others.
The impression now among Congressmen is that the LS polls were won by the BJP due to people’s support for Narendra Modi as PM for a second term, and it was not essentially a BJP-Congress tussle.
The local body polls were held in wards of civic bodies in Jaipur, Alwar, Bhilwara, Sri Ganganagar, Bharatpur, Churu, Karauli, Hanumangarh, Budi, Dholpur and Sirohi districts. Congress candidates won in Indragarh, Jahazpur, Sujangarh, Shahpura, Nohar, Hindon, Behror, Khairthal and Jahazpur. Independents backed by the party won in Gajsinghpur and Rawatsar. — IHN-NN
