DEMISE … Noted Kannada playwright and actor Girish Karnad dies at age 81 in Bengaluru; nation mourns genius’ exit

BENGALURU: Jnanpith winner, reputed playwright, actor and film-maker Girish Karnad passed away at age 81 on Monday. The death came due to organ failure at his home in Vittal Mallya Road after prolonged illness. In his creations, he resorted largely to themes from history and mythology and won adulation.

Karnad had begun acting and screen-play writing from 1970, with a Kannada movie by name Samskara. It had won the Golden Lotus award, the first for a Kannada film. Among his popular movies are Utsav, Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Ondanondu Kaladalli, Kanooru Heggaditi and Kaadu, Swami and Pukar, Nishaant and Manthan. He was a recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. He had worked in Bollywood as well as Kannada cinema. His role in the Malgudi Days TV serial had won special admiration.

In a condolence message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences on Twitter: Said the PM, “His works will continue being popular in the years to come.” –IHN-NN
