CWC MEET … Rahul offers to resign, CWC says no and asks him to fix the problems

NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee on Saturday unanimously and firmly rejected the offer of resignation extended by party president Rahul Gandhi and affirmed faith in him despite the odds facing the party. The meeting went one step ahead and decided that this now is time for Rahul Gandhi to effect a complete revamp of the leadership in the party both at the central and state levels.

The CWC felt Rahul Gandhi’s leadership was the need of the hour for the party.

The offer was made by the party chief in view of the failure on the party to present a good show at the Lok Sabha polls. Yet, the party got eight more seats than what it got in 2014 — when it won 44 seats against the present tally of 52. The Congress, egged on by its wins in assembly polls in MP, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh, had hoped to trounce PM Modi and wrest power this time.

Worse, Rahul Gandhi found himself defeated in the traditional seat of Amethi, where Union minister Smriti Irani won this time. Rahul however won the Wayanad seat with a four lakh plus margin in Wayanad in Kerala, and hence ensured his presence in the 17th Lok Sabha.

After the CWC meet, Rahul Gandhi left the scene without meeting reporters who waited outside. Senior leader AK Antony who addressed the media later admitted the Congress show was disastrous and that the party would go into the reasons. Congress communications chief Randeep Singh Surjewala briefed the media and confirmed that Rahul Gandhi submitted his resignation but this was not accepted. IHN-NN
