PM MEETS PREZ … Cabinet resigns to pave way for new government; 16th LS to be dissolved

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his council of ministers have send in their resignation letters to President Ram nath Kovind on Friday, which was duly accepted. This follows the release of results of the Lok Sabha polls for constituting the 17-th Lok Sabha, after the term of the previous Lok Sabha comes to a close at end of five years, on June 3.

At a cabinet meeting earlier in the day, the Union Council of Ministers recommended the dissolution of the 16 th Lok Sabha, the lower house or Parliament to where people directly elect their representatives. Assemblies in states elect members to the upper house, the Rajya Sabha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on President Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

On Saturday, May 25, the newly elected members of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance will meet here to formally elect its leader. A foregone conclusion is Modi will be elected as leader. The meeting will take place at the Central Hall of Parliament at 5pm.

The Congress working committee (CWC) would also be meeting on Saturday to discuss the party’s poll debacle. Party president Rahul Gandhi is likely to submit his resignation after taking moral responsibility for the debacle, and also for his own defeat in the traditional Nehru-family pocketborough of Amethi. He has however won with a huge margin from a second constituency, Wayanad in Kerala.  –IHN-NN
