NAIDU QUITS … JAGAN SET TO FORM GOVT IN ANDHRA PRADESH

NEWS NAIDU JAGAN

HYDERABAD: Faced with a massive electoral disaster for his Telugu Desam party in Andhra Pradesh for the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu tendered his resignation to the governor on Thursday. The resignation was submitted to Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, ESL Narasimhan. The governor stated in a communique this evening that he accepted the resignation but asked Naidu to continue in office till the formation of the new government.

The YSR Congress, led by Jaganmohan Reddy, will form the next government.

In recent times, after breaking away from the NDA, the TDP leader was on a roll, taking upon himself the responsibility of organising an anti-BJP anti-Modi opposition front to grab power after this Lok Sabha polls. He got encouragement from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and some other senior politicians like AAP chief and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

As it turns out, both Naidu and Kejriwal faced a rout for their respective parties in the LS polls. BJP took all the seats from Delhi, while the AAP got one seat from Punjab, ensuring its presence in the new Lok Sabha.

YSR CONGRESS
YSR Congress which swept the assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh is led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, who faced political van vaas in recent years, after a high profile period when his father YS Rajasekhara Reddy was Congress chief minister. Later, the YSR Congress was formed but it did not succeed in winning power till now, though in between a state bifurcation took place between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The capital city Hyderabad remained with the newly carved state, Telangana, while Naidu was in the process of building a new state capital for Andhra Pradesh — forming the southern and eastern districts of former united Andhra Pradesh state.

Both Naidu and YSR were chief ministers for different terms in former Andhra Pradesh. YSR died in a mysterious helicopter crash. Both were not seen as clean politicians. That stigma is carried forward to Jagan too, on the premise that he inherited such wealth in huge forms. He promises to turn a new leaf. Jagan claims he earned his huge wealth by being a successful businessman.

The YSR family is Christian, and enjoys good support from this segment of the population too. The family hails from the mining hub of Kadappa.

Naidu was in wilderness for a period until he returned to power to head the new AP state after winning the 2016 AP polls — the first for the new state. He partly built Amravati, fashioned as a world-class city, but could not carry works forward effectively due to paucity of funds. What set Naidu against Modi is also believed to be the Enforcement Raids and seizure of huge stocks of currency from some locations linked indirectly to Naidu and his associates.

Naidu, as CM of undivided AP, has been credited with several modernisation schemes in Hyderabad, including the initiation of a Metro Rail plan, building of flyovers to ease traffic and giving a major push to the IT sector in Hyderabad, which is now the main money-spinner for the Telangana state.

Meanwhile, the Jana Sena party formed in 2014 by actor and BC leader Pawan Kalyan failed to win people’s support in this assembly polls. Pawan himself was trailing behind YSRC nominees in the two constituencies he filed nominations, as counting was held Thursday. IHN-NN
