BJP SWEEPS LOK SABHA POLLS; Mamata receives a jolt, Naidu loses power

NEW DELHI: The BJP-led NDA is sweeping the Lok Sabha polls, registering near-total victory in almost every state, other than Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In Kerala, the Congress-led UDF swept 19 of the 20 seats, while the DMK-Congress-Left alliance is set to sweep the polls in Tamil Nadu. It was a mixed bag in Karnatka, while Chandrababu Naidu was ousted from power in the state assembly polls by his main rival, the YSRC led by Jagan Mohan Rao. In Telangana, Chandrashekar Rao won more seats though the BJP won some seats and the Congress one.

The Hindi belt stood solidly  behind the BJP. The party had a virtual sweep in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Delhi. Captain Amrinder Singh of the Congress checkmated the BJP-Akali Dal in Punjab. The SP-BSP alliance fared moderately well, while the BJP is set to retain more than 50 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

In Delhi, it was total rout for chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP. The AAP won one Lok Sabha seat from Punjab.

In West Bengal, the BJP registered a spectacular win, leading in 19 constituencies while the Trinamool of Mamata Banerjee led in 23 seats. Assam stood by the BJP, and Bihar stood by the BJP-JDU alliance.

The BJP registered major wins in the North-East too.

For the left, it was a near-total wipe-out, though the CPI and the CPIM are leading in two each constituencies in Tamil Nadu, where it as also the Congress allied with the DMK. It was disaster for the AIADMK.

In effect, PM Modi has managed to vanquish all of his main detractors in this round of Lok Sabha polls, and emerged stronger than ever.
