LS POLLS: "Your father was Number One Chor," PM Modi hits back at Rahul Gandhi at campaign meet in UP

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has, in one of the sharpest attacks on Nehru family, reminded Congress president Rahul Gandhi at a campaign rally in Uttar Pradesh that his father, former PM Rajiv Gandhi, was corrupt number one. The attack came in the context of the campaign against Modi by the Congress leader, accusing the present PM of being a “corrupt chowkidar,” in view of allegations surrounding the Modi government’s Rafale fighter jet deal with France.

“Your father was praised as Mr Clean by his courtiers, but his life ended as Bhrashtachari No 1,” PM Modi was quoted in a news report from Lucknow as saying at a campaign rally. The PM’s hint was to the Bofors guns deal with Sweden in the 1980s, in which huge bribes had allegedly been paid to those linked to Rajiv Gandhi including some Italians. Cases in these respects did not reach anywhere.

Rahul Gandhi in specific has been alleging at campaign meets that Chowkidar Chor Hai – meaning PM Modi who describes himself as the chowkidar of the nation. Retorted Modi, “By tarnishing my image and by making me look small, these people want to form an unstable and a weak government in the country.” –Agencies, IHN-NN
