DEMISE: Goa CM Manohar Parrikar is no more; funeral on Monday; National Mourning declared

PANAJI: Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar is no more. He was ailing from cancer and the end came on Sunday evening. He was 63. Parrikar worked as Union Defence Minister before he shifted his base back to Goa and became chief minister after the last assembly polls. A popular leader, the BJP will have difficulty pulling its ministry along in the absence of widely popular Parrikar. A day of national mourning has been announced for Monday. 

The chief minister, who ran three terms in all, was ailing for the past one year, but his presence in government was a matter of must for the BJP in the state. The funeral will take place tomorrow as per Brahminical traditions, after a procession that will wend through the streets here around 4pm Monday. 

Parrikar was taking treatment at hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, and New York for the past one year. He is survived by wife Medha Parrikar. The couple  has two sons. He entered politics after graduation from IIT, Mumbai. –IHN-NN
