CBI ROW: Alok Verma resigns, after he was shunted to home guards chief post

UPDATE: Friday, January 11: CBI director Alok Verma resigns; says he was removed from the post by the selection panel through unacceptable and unlawful means. He says he would take over as home guards chief, a post to which he was shunted until his retirement less than a month hence.

Meanwhile, the several decisions that Verma took and orders he issued in less than 24 hours after his reinstatement have now been cancelled by the temporary chief Nageswara Rao.

FIRST REPORT: January 10, Thursday:

NEW DELHI: Controversial CBI chief Alok Verma is out again. The high-power selection panel for CBI chief which met under the chairmanship of prime minister Narendra Modi here on Wednesday decided to remove Verma from the post, on the ground he was found to be corrupt and he had also been accused of dereliction of duty. The decision was based on a probe report presented by the Central Vigilance Commission on the allegations against him.

The other members at the meeting were Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Supreme Court’s Justice AK Sikri, who was deputed by SC chief justice Ranjan Gogoi. Kharge opposed the decision, and the panel took the decision by majority opinion.

A 1979 batch IPS officer of the Union Territories cadre, Verma has been moved out to the post of director general of fire and services, civil defence and home guards, for the remainder of the few weeks he has before retirement, on January 31.

Verma had been sent on forced leave by the Union Government after ugly row erupted between him and his deputy, special director Rakesh Asthana, but the Supreme Court reinstated him. Upon return to the post in the past couple of days, Verma reversed several decisions taken by the CBI in his absence. By then, it was clear that the Modi government will take some strong action. Verma is known to be a favourite of the Congress and Asthana, who put spokes into Verma’s wheel, a favourite of Modi. Both Verma and Asthana accused each other of large-scale corruption, leading to a major embarrassment for the CBI a few months ago.

Temporarily, the CBI director post will be held by M Nageswar Rao, an official announcement said. –IHN-NN
