NEW CM FOR MP: Kamal Nath to be chief minister of Madhya Pradesh; word on Rajasthan on Friday

NEW DELHI/BHOPAL: Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath will be the new Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Congress emissary AK Antony was by Nath’s side as the announcement was made in Bhopal shortly before midnight. The Congress will be forming a government in the state after 15 years of uninterrupted rule by the BJP. The Congress will have the support of the BSP in forming the government.

Kamal Nath entered politics as a Doon School chum of Sanjay Gandhi in the mid-1970s, and he had his ups and downs in politics. In recent years, he is also known as a top entrepreneur in the eastern region of Madhya Pradesh, which he had made his home turf. He had repeatedly occupied minister post in the Union Government, including the UPA periods.

State capitals in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan went into a tizzy Thursday night, as supporters of main contenders for CM post kept their fire alive, shouting slogans in support of their favourites.

Top contenders for the CM post in Madhya Pradesh, Kamalnath and Jyotiraditya Scinda arrived in Bhopal from New Delhi late at night, followed by Congress emissary AK Antony. Both contenders had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi before they left Delhi for Bhopal.

Meanwhile, a meeting was on in Delhi late at night between Rahul Gandhi and the two CM contenders from Rajasthan — Sachin Pilot and Ashok Gehlot. The final word will be known by Friday, a participant at the meeting told the media shortly before midnight.

Sonia Gandhi was also present in the discussions in Delhi all through the day, party sources said, adding that Priyanka Gandhi was also at hand to help in the selections. “Kamal Nath is their collective choice,” a Congress source said. –IHN-NN
