TRAIN MISHAP: Train mishap in Amritsar on Dussera day kills over 50 of crowd on the track


NEW DELHI: In a major rail mishap, over 50 people were killed as a DMU (diesel multiple unit) train overran a crowd witnessing the festival from a railway track in Amritsar Friday evening. The festival saw demon king Ravan’s effigy being burnt in a symbolic demonstration of the central theme of the festival – the victory of good over evil. The incident occurred at Joda Phatak. 

Crackers were exploding, and in the noise, the crowd failed to hear the sound of the approaching train. Reports said local bodies minister Navjot Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu was the chief guest at the event. The railways has ordered an inquiry. The prime minister and railway minister were among those who have expressed their sorrow over the mishap. 

Most of the victims were migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, it is reported.–IHN-NN
